With Hardship Comes Ease – Allah’s Powerful Promise
Surah Ash-Sharh
Translation (English)
1. Did We not expand for you your chest?
2. And We removed from you your burden
3. Which had weighed upon your back
4. And We raised high for you your reputation
5. For indeed, with hardship comes ease
6. Indeed, with hardship comes ease
7. So when you are free, then strive in worship
8. And to your Lord turn all your attention.
This Surah was revealed to comfort Muhammad during the difficult early days of preaching Islam in Makkah.
Explanation (Simple Tafsir)
1. Expansion of the chest
Allah gave the Prophet ﷺ spiritual strength, wisdom, and patience to carry the mission of Islam.
2–3. Removal of the burden
The heavy responsibility and worries of the message of Islam were made easier by Allah.
4. Raising the mention
Allah raised the status of the Prophet ﷺ. His name is mentioned with Allah in the Shahadah, Adhan, and prayers.
5–6. Hardship with ease
Allah repeats this message twice to assure believers that every hardship is followed by ease.
7–8. Turn to worship
After completing worldly duties, believers should turn toward prayer, worship, and remembrance of Allah.
Shan-e-Nuzool (Reason of Revelation)
This Surah was revealed in Makkah when Muhammad ﷺ was facing strong opposition from the Quraysh.
The Prophet ﷺ experienced:
Mockery and insults
Rejection of the message
Emotional and spiritual burden of guiding people
Allah revealed this Surah to comfort and strengthen the Prophet ﷺ, reminding him that:
Allah is supporting him
His honor will be raised
Every difficulty will be followed by ease.
