How much theft leads to hand-cutting in Islam

In Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 38, Allah says:
"As for the male thief and the female thief, cut off their hands."

But Islam requires justice before punishment.

⚖️ How Much Theft Leads to Hand Cutting in Islam?

✅ Minimum Amount for Theft Punishment (Nisab):

🔸 One-quarter of a dinar or its equivalent in value
(According to today’s value, this is roughly 40–50 grams of silver or more in monetary worth)

So if the stolen item is worth more than the set threshold (Nisab), only then does the hand-cutting punishment apply.

“The hand is not to be cut off unless the stolen property is worth a quarter of a dinar or more.”
