Woe to the Cheaters - Quran’s Shocking Warning
Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:1–14)
π Translation (Verses 1–14)
1. Woe to those who give less [in measure and weight],
2. Who, when they take a measure from people, they take in full,
3. But when they give them by measure or by weight, they cause loss.
4. Do they not think that they will be resurrected,
5. For a tremendous Day –
6. The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
7. No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in Sijjeen.
8. And what can make you know what Sijjeen is?
9. A written register.
10. Woe that Day to the deniers,
11. Those who deny the Day of Judgment.
12. And none denies it except every sinful transgressor.
13. When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Legends of the former peoples.”
14. Nay! But their hearts have been rusted over by what they used to earn.
π Summary
These verses warn against cheating in business by giving less in measure or weight. Allah condemns such dishonesty and reminds that all humans will be resurrected for accountability on the Day of Judgment. The deeds of the wicked are recorded in Sijjeen (a register of evil), and their denial of the Hereafter is due to their sins. Their hearts have become sealed with rust because of their constant wrongdoing.
π Shan-e-Nuzool (Background of Revelation)
This Surah was revealed in Makkah.
According to commentators, the people of Makkah (and also Madinah later) had a widespread practice of cheating in trade — they would take full when buying but give less when selling.
Allah revealed these verses to warn them that such dishonesty leads to destruction in this world and humiliation in the Hereafter.
π Lessons
Honesty is part of faith – cheating in trade is a major sin.
Accountability is certain – one day everyone will stand before Allah.
Sins harden the heart – constant wrongdoing covers the heart with rust.
Denial of the Hereafter usually comes from arrogance and sinful living.
True success is honesty, justice, and fairness in dealings with others.
