Saqar: The Hellfire That Spares Nothing
Surah Al-Muddaththir (74:25–31) – English Translation
25. “This is nothing but the word of a human being.”
26. I will cast him into Saqar (Hellfire).
27. And what will make you know what Saqar is?
28. It leaves nothing and spares nothing.
29. It scorches the skin.
30. Over it are nineteen (angels).
31. And We have appointed only angels as guardians of the Fire. And We made their number only as a trial for the disbelievers—so that those who were given the Scripture may be certain, the believers may increase in faith, and that those given the Scripture and the believers may have no doubt; and that those in whose hearts is disease and the disbelievers may say, “What does Allah intend by this example?” Thus Allah misguides whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord except Him. And this is nothing but a reminder for mankind.
π Explanation (Ayah-by-Ayah – Simple & Strong)
Ayah 25
This statement was made after recognizing the power of the Qur’an.
Calling it “human speech” was a deliberate lie, not ignorance.
Ayah 26–29
Saqar is a specific level of Hell.
It destroys completely, not partially.
It burns the skin, the place of pain perception.
This is one of the harshest descriptions of Hell in the Qur’an.
Ayah 30
19 angels guard Hell.
Their number is precise, deliberate, and powerful.
Disbelievers mocked this number—revealing arrogance.
Ayah 31
The number strengthens believers, confuses hypocrites, and exposes deniers.
Allah alone knows His unseen forces.
The Qur’an is a final warning, not a story.
π§ Summary (from Tafseer Ibn Kathir – Meaning Based)
These verses were revealed about Waleed bin Mugheerah.
He knew the Qur’an was truth, yet rejected it due to pride and status.
Allah exposed his inner plotting step-by-step.
His punishment was announced publicly and severely.
The lesson:
π Knowing the truth but rejecting it is worse than ignorance.
π Short Story: Waleed bin Mugheerah
Waleed bin Mugheerah was:
A leader of Quraysh
A master of Arabic language
A wealthy, influential man
He listened to the Qur’an and admitted:
“By Allah, this speech has sweetness and power.”
But when Quraysh pressured him, he chose status over truth.
He accused the Qur’an of being magic and human speech.
Allah then revealed his inner thoughts in the Qur’an and promised him Saqar.
π Lesson:
Pride can destroy even the most intelligent minds.
