Abu Jahl Tried to Stop the Prophet ﷺ—Then Allah Revealed This


 Surah Al-'Alaq (Chapter 96)

Introduction

Surah Al-'Alaq is the 96th chapter of the Holy Qur'an and consists of 19 verses. The first five verses were the very first revelation sent to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Cave of Hira through Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). The Surah emphasizes the importance of knowledge, reading, humility, and complete submission to Allah.

Explanation

The first revelation begins with the command "Read", highlighting that Islam values knowledge and learning. Allah reminds humanity that He created mankind from a humble beginning and blessed them with the ability to learn through the pen.

The Surah then warns that when people become arrogant and believe they are self-sufficient, they often rebel against Allah. It specifically refers to Abu Jahl, who tried to prevent Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from praying at the Ka'bah. Allah reassures His Messenger ﷺ that the oppressors will be held accountable and concludes by commanding believers to remain steadfast in worship, prostrate before Allah, and seek closeness to Him.

Description

Surah Al-'Alaq teaches that true knowledge comes from Allah, and every believer should seek beneficial knowledge with sincerity. It warns against pride and reminds us that worldly power cannot overcome Allah's authority. The Surah ends with a beautiful command to increase in worship, because true honour and nearness are found in sincere obedience to Allah.
