The Greatest Test of Faith | Prophet Ibrahim (AS) & Ishmael

English Translation (Verses 100–111)

37:100
"My Lord, grant me a righteous son."

37:101
So We gave him the good news of a gentle and forbearing boy.

37:102
Then, when the boy reached the age where he could work alongside his father, Abraham said, "My dear son, I have seen in a dream that I am sacrificing you. Tell me what you think." He replied, "My dear father, do as you are commanded. If Allah wills, you will find me among the patient."

37:103
Then, when they both submitted to Allah's will, and Abraham laid him down on his forehead,

37:104
We called out to him, "O Abraham!"

37:105
"You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, this is how We reward those who do good.

37:106
Indeed, this was truly a clear test.

37:107
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.

37:108
And We left for him an honorable mention among later generations.

37:109
"Peace be upon Abraham."

37:110
This is how We reward those who do good.

37:111
Indeed, he was one of Our believing servants.

Introduction

Surah As-Saffat (37:100–111) narrates one of the most profound stories of faith, obedience, and sacrifice in the Qur'an. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was tested with a command to sacrifice his beloved son, Prophet Ishmael (AS). Their complete submission to Allah's will became a timeless example of true faith and devotion, and the event is commemorated every year through Eid al-Adha.

Description

After years of praying for a righteous child, Allah blessed Prophet Ibrahim (AS) with Prophet Ishmael (AS). When Ishmael (AS) grew old enough to assist his father, Ibrahim (AS) saw in a dream that Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son. Without hesitation, both father and son accepted Allah's command. As Ibrahim (AS) prepared to fulfill the command, Allah stopped him and replaced Ishmael (AS) with a great sacrifice, proving that the purpose of the test was their sincerity and complete submission.

Lesson

Trust Allah even when His wisdom is beyond our understanding.

True faith means obeying Allah wholeheartedly.

Patience and submission lead to Allah's mercy and reward.

Parents and children should strengthen each other in faith.

Allah never wastes the sacrifice of those who sincerely obey Him.

Every trial is an opportunity to draw closer to Allah.

Summary

These verses highlight the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ishmael (AS). Their willingness to obey Allah, despite the greatest personal sacrifice, demonstrates the true meaning of Islam—complete submission to the Creator. Allah honored their sincerity by replacing the sacrifice and preserving their legacy for all generations.
