Introduction to the People of Lut (Lot)

Surah Al-Hijr: Verses 67–77 (English Translation)

Tafsir (Explanation)

Asbab al-Nuzul (Context of Revelation / Historical Background)

🌍 Introduction: The People of Lut (Lot)

The people of Prophet Lut (Lot, peace be upon him) lived in the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah near the Dead Sea (present-day Jordan/Palestine region). They were known for their widespread immorality, especially the act of homosexuality, which was the major sin that led to their destruction. Lut (A.S.) was sent to guide them, but they rejected him, mocked his message, and persisted in evil.

📖 Surah Al-Hijr – Verses 67 to 77 (Translation)

67. And the people of the city came rejoicing.
68. [Lut] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me."
69. "And fear Allah and do not disgrace me."
70. They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"
71. [Lut] said, "These are my daughters, if you must act."
72. By your life [O Prophet], they were wandering blindly in their intoxication.
73. So the shriek seized them at sunrise.
74. And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.
75. Surely in this are signs for those who discern.
76. And indeed, those cities are situated on an evident path.
77. Indeed, in that is a sign for the believers.

📘 Tafsir (Explanation of Verses 67–77)

Verses 67–68: The townspeople, hearing of the arrival of handsome guests (angels in human form), came rushing with evil intent. Prophet Lut was distressed and begged them to respect his guests and not dishonor him.

Verse 69: He reminds them to fear Allah, hinting at their moral decay.

Verse 70: The people rudely remind him that he has been warned not to interfere in their "personal matters" before, showing their arrogance and disobedience.

Verse 71: Lut offers them his daughters in marriage — interpreted by many scholars as a symbolic call to lawful, natural relationships, not an actual offer.

Verse 72: Allah swears by the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that these people were lost in their lust, heedless and arrogant.

Verse 73: As the sun rose, a mighty blast (sayhah) struck them — this was the beginning of their punishment.

Verse 74: The cities were turned upside down and rained upon with stones made of baked clay — a punishment precise and inescapable.

Verse 75–77: These verses emphasize that there are signs in this destruction for those who believe and reflect. The ruins of these cities were visible to the people of Makkah on their trade routes — a physical, lasting reminder.

📚 Asbab al-Nuzul (Context of Revelation)

Though this passage is part of the continuous narrative in Surah Al-Hijr, it also served as a warning to the disbelievers of Makkah who mocked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ just like the people of Lut mocked their Prophet. The Qur’an uses the story as a parallel to warn of the consequences of rejecting divine guidance and indulging in sin.
