Allah’s Wrath on the Murderer of a Believer #surahalnisa #intentionalmurder #majorsin #bloodmoney
Surah An-Nisa (Verse 92–93) – English Translation
Verse 92
"It is not for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake, then (the expiation is) freeing a believing slave and paying blood money to the family of the deceased, unless they remit it as charity. But if the slain belonged to a people at war with you, and he was a believer, then freeing a believing slave is enough. And if he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty, then pay the blood money to his family and free a believing slave. And if one cannot afford this, then (he must) fast for two consecutive months as a repentance from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."
Verse 93
"And whoever kills a believer intentionally – his recompense is Hell, to abide therein forever. And the wrath of Allah is upon him, and His curse, and He has prepared for him a great punishment."
📚 Summary (Tafseer Ibn Kathir)
Verse 92:
This verse explains the ruling of accidental killing (qatl khata’).
If a believer is killed by mistake, the killer must:
Free a believing slave, and
Pay diyah (blood money) to the family, unless they forgive.
If the victim was from an enemy nation but a Muslim, only freeing a slave is required.
If the victim was from a treaty nation, then both diyah and freeing a slave are necessary.
If the killer cannot afford freeing a slave, then he must fast two consecutive months as repentance.
Verse 93:
This verse strictly prohibits intentional murder of a believer.
The punishment is very severe:
Eternal Hellfire,
Allah’s anger,
Allah’s curse,
And a great punishment prepared.
Ibn Kathir explains that this warning shows the gravity of taking an innocent life, and scholars differ whether “forever in Hell” applies if the killer dies without repentance.
🌹 Shan-e-Nuzool (Background of Revelation)
These verses were revealed concerning the laws of killing within the Muslim community after battles had started between Muslims and their enemies.
A companion mistakenly killed a believer during a battle, thinking he was an enemy. This incident led to the revelation of verse 92 explaining the rules of qatl khata’ (accidental killing).
Verse 93 was revealed to show how severe and unforgivable intentional murder of a believer is.
