The True Story of Abraha and the Kaaba#Prophet’sﷺ #birds #kaaba #elephantarmy

Introduction

Surah Al-Fil (The Elephant) is the 105th chapter of the Qur’an, revealed in Makkah. It has 5 short yet powerful verses describing a historical event in which Allah protected the Kaaba from destruction. The Surah serves as a reminder of Allah’s power over tyrants and His protection of the sacred places.

📝 Summary

This Surah narrates the incident of Abraha, a Christian ruler from Yemen, who marched with a massive army and elephants to destroy the Kaaba. Allah destroyed them completely by sending flocks of birds carrying stones of baked clay, making them like chewed straw. It highlights Allah’s might and the humiliation of the arrogant.

📖 Shan-e-Nuzool (Reason of Revelation)

Surah Al-Fil was revealed to remind the Quraysh of Allah’s favor upon them by protecting the Kaaba from the invaders. This event occurred just weeks or months before the birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, making it fresh in the memory of the Arabs. The Quraysh were to understand that the One who saved the Kaaba is the same Lord they should worship, instead of idols.

🏺 Historical True Story

In the year known as ‘Aam al-Fil’ (Year of the Elephant), Abraha al-Ashram, the ruler of Yemen under the Kingdom of Axum, built a magnificent church called Al-Qullays to divert pilgrims from the Kaaba to Yemen. When his plan failed, he became enraged and decided to destroy the Kaaba.
He marched towards Makkah with an army of over 60,000 soldiers, including elephants — the largest of which was named Mahmoud.

Upon reaching near Makkah, they seized camels belonging to Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When Abdul Muttalib met Abraha, he only requested his camels back, saying, “I am the owner of the camels, and the Kaaba has a Lord who will protect it.”

When Abraha advanced, Allah sent flocks of birds (Ababil) carrying stones of baked clay. Each soldier struck was instantly destroyed, and the entire army perished. Abraha himself suffered a terrible disease and died shortly after returning to Yemen.

This miracle became a turning point in Arab history, strengthening the sanctity of the Kaaba.
