English Translation

And mention in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east.

Verse 17
And she took a screen to seclude herself from them. Then We sent to her Our Spirit (Angel Jibreel), and he appeared before her as a well-proportioned man.

Verse 18
She said, “Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, if you are God-fearing.”

Verse 19
He said, “I am only a messenger of your Lord to grant you a pure son.”

Verse 20
She said, “How can I have a son when no man has touched me, nor have I been unchaste?”

Verse 21
He said, “Thus it will be. Your Lord says: ‘It is easy for Me. We will make him a sign for mankind and a mercy from Us.’ And this matter has already been decreed.”

Explanation (Simple Tafsir)

These verses describe the beginning of the miraculous story of Maryam (Mary) and the birth of Prophet Isa (Jesus).

Maryam chose a quiet place away from people to worship Allah. During this time, Allah sent Angel Jibreel to her in the form of a human. Seeing a man suddenly appear frightened her, so she immediately sought protection from Allah.

Jibreel then told her that he was sent by Allah to give her the news of a pure son, Prophet Isa. Maryam was surprised because she had never been touched by any man and had always been a chaste woman.

Jibreel reassured her that this miracle would happen by the command of Allah. Allah wanted to make Isa a sign of His power and a mercy for people.

Shan-e-Nuzool (From Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, these verses were revealed to explain the true story of Maryam and the miraculous birth of Isa (Jesus). The Qur’an clarified this story to correct misunderstandings that existed among earlier communities about Mary and Jesus.

Ibn Kathir explains that Allah sent Angel Jibreel in human form so Maryam could understand the message clearly. The birth of Isa without a father was meant to demonstrate Allah’s absolute power, just as He created Adam without parents.

Thus Isa’s birth was a great sign from Allah for humanity.
