Surah Al-Falaq

English Translation (Verse by Verse)

1. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.
2. From the evil of what He has created.
3. And from the evil of the darkness when it settles.
4. And from the evil of those who blow on knots (practice witchcraft).
5. And from the evil of an envier when he envies.

Explanation

Surah Al-Falaq is a powerful supplication taught by Allah for protection from hidden and visible harms.

Lord of Daybreak: Allah is the One who brings light after darkness and removes harm.

Evil of creation: Protection from any harm that may come from people, animals, jinn, or unseen dangers.

Darkness of night: Night can conceal many dangers and fears.

Blowers in knots: Refers to witchcraft and black magic practices.

Envier: Protection from jealousy and the evil eye that can harm others.

This Surah teaches believers to seek refuge in Allah from every form of evil.

Surah Al-Falaq — Occasion of Revelation (Shan-e-Nuzool)

According to Islamic scholars and commentators, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas are called Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn (the two chapters of seeking refuge), because they teach believers how to seek protection from Allah against different kinds of evil.

Historical Background

It is reported that a man named Labid ibn al-A'sam practiced magic against Muhammad.
Because of this magic, the Prophet ﷺ experienced temporary weakness.

Then Allah sent the angel Jibril, who revealed these two chapters:

Surah An-Nas

When the Prophet ﷺ recited these verses, the effect of the magic gradually disappeared and he was cured.

This narration is mentioned in authentic hadith collections such as Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
